Occupy the Republican National Convention in Tampa

The Melbourne ISO is urging local progressive groups in Florida’s Space Coast to mobilize and protest the Republican National Convention here in our very own state of Florida. Per the Melbourne ISO:

ISO - Protest the RNC“The RNC stands for upholding the 1% against the 99%, for attacking the rights of people of color, women, different LGBT communities, for destroying jobs, attacking unions, war-mongering, and the list goes on. It is our responsibility, as Floridians, to stand up and fight back against the Republicans by peacefully marching and making our voices heard, our message: “You and your ideas are not welcome in Florida, you and your ideas are rejected by the 99%!” The whole world will be watching Tampa on August 27th, do the right thing and stand up against the RNC!

Join this event if you would like to carpool to the RNC in August. Carpooling is the most efficient, not to mention cheapest, way for all of us to get there.

For those in Melbourne/Palm Bay/Eau Gallie area:
We will be meeting at the Publix parking lot on 192 and getting into the cars which will be carpooling. Signs will already be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Please bring bottled water, sunscreen, and some strong vocal chords! Each person will only have to contribute $10 towards the carpool, which will go towards gas, sign-making materials, etc.

For those in Cocoa/Rockledge/Cape Canaveral area:
Post a message in the ISO Facebook event (see below) indicating that you are from an area outside of the general Melbourne area. WE WILL ORGANIZE CARPOOLING FOR YOU. *BUT* we need to know who you are and be able to get in touch with you to do so!”

May Day Zombie Walk

May 1st, 2012 (aka May Day) was a special day for the 99%. Countless groups and organizations took to the streets to join in a General Strike against a system which does not work for us. OMF would like to thank all the “zombies” who made it out to our local solidarity event in downtown Melbourne. In the future, we hope to coordinate these types of events with other local progressive groups to create a stronger and ultimately more powerful coalition of people power for change.

Occupy Daily Bread

On Sunday April 29th, OMF members volunteered at Daily Bread in Melbourne, Florida to help feed the hungry and homeless. Among our duties were handing out take-out sandwiches and distributing bread/butter and desserts with the Daily Bread meal choices which included fried chicken, pizza, veggies, pork & beans, pasta and tomato basil soup. We also helped clean up the kitchen after concluding the Sunday lunch shift. The Daily Bread staff was very friendly and helpful and we were glad to have gotten the opportunity to help some of the less fortunate members of the community. We thank Daily Bread for welcoming us and we will most likely be establishing a regular volunteer schedule in the near future.

OMF 99% Spring Training Debrief

We would like to thank all attendees of our 99% Spring training on Saturday April 14th. It was a great success. We had about half of those registered attending, about 40 people in total including hosts and trainers, which was on target with what was expected. Thank you for taking the time to participate and share your struggles with us so we can all become more motivated to take action and create the changes we want. We hope to have more educational events like this in the near future and we welcome any suggestions you may have for making these types of events more meaningful and valuable. We also hope you will join us in the future at our GA’s and/or events, or invite us to your event. Solidarity!
Note: If you missed our training, you can now take advantage of the online version here.
